Communities: Puerto El Morro, Cuenca, El Cercado, Tingo Pucarà, & San Antonio de Alāo

 

Puerto El Morro – B3 partnered with Nuevos Horizontes, a local NGO, to build new classrooms for high school students. Prior to this, students would have to travel to a nearby town to attend classes and many would not graduate. These classrooms were built near an existing primary school, promoting continued education and a more promising future.

 

Cuenca – B3 returned to work with Casa Hogar* to build a second facility to house at-risk older boys, constructing a casita (“cottage”) with two bedrooms housing 6-8 boys each, bathrooms, a study area, and a small bedroom for the “house parent”. This home has given the older boys an opportunity to achieve and maintain a healthy life and future.

*In 2007, Builders Beyond Borders worked with Casa Hogar Guardiana de la Fe to build classrooms for at-risk young boys.

 

El Cercado – B3 partnered with Un Techo para mi País (UTPMP) and the local community to build ten homes for local families. The homes provided the immediate relief needed by the families to take their first steps towards self-sufficiency and a better future.

 

Tingo Pucará – B3 worked with the community and other partners (including the Peace Corps, University of Pittsburgh Masters of Engineering Program, Engineers Without Borders, and the University of San Francisco in Quito) to create and implement a water distribution system, granting each family access to a tap stand to be used for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. This project  a holding tank, pump house, plumbing, and lavanderias (“washhouses”).

 

San Antonio de Alão – B3 worked alongside the community to construct much-needed bathrooms for the wawa wasi (daycare center) and the community center. This involved digging a trench (100+ meters) for a pipe to connect to the existing sewer system and mixing cement for the roof.
