2010 Peru

Communities: San Antonio, San Bartolo, Bernales, Coayllo, & Ancon

San Antonio – B3 partnered with the US Peace Corp and the community to improve sanitation by building flush-pour style latrines and hand washing stations. The latrines are designed to connect to sewer lines to ensure sustainability for years to come. B3 poured cement floors, built the “house” / room to be used as the bathroom itself, installed the roof, and dug trenches for pipes.

San Bartolo – B3 partnered with Creamos (a private NGO that concentrates on social work) to build a much-needed wawa wasi (Quechua for “house of the children”) in this small community. This is a center where mothers can safely leave their children while they find work; mothers will take turns working in the wawa wasi so that other mothers will also have the opportunity to work. The building is designed in such a way that additional rooms can be added as the program grows. In addition, B3 helped construct a wall around the wawa wasi to ensure safety.

Bernales – B3 partnered with the US Peace Corps and the community to improve sanitation by building flush-pour style latrines and hand washing stations. The latrines are designed to connect to sewer lines to ensure sustainability. For the latrines that were unable to connect directly to the sewer lines, B3 constructed composting style facilities. B3 poured cement floors, built the room to be used as the bathroom itself, installed the roof, and dug trenches for pipes.

Coayllo – B3 partnered with the US Peace Corps to build a new aqueduct / pipeline to bring water to a community that was severely damaged by a 2007 earthquake. The completed pipeline measured about 2 KM in length and carries water from the existing reservoir to about 70+ homes.

Ancon –  B3 worked with Cruz Blanca to build a new infirmary, bathrooms, and renovated a communal space. Cruz Blanca is an organization affiliated with the Catholic Church that provides a summer program for orphans and street kids, offering a respite from hardship and teaching basic hygiene and life skills to develop self esteem.  In addition to the summer program, workshops for parents are offered on weekends throughout the year.
