Builders Beyond Borders is unlike other youth organizations – B3 students develop leadership skills, responsibility and character through local and global community service. And our Adult Advisors are a pivotal part of the B3 program. We depend on our adult leaders to help our students attain these skills and guide them towards becoming caring, responsible leaders that will have the potential to affect important and positive change in the world.
Who is our typical Advisor? Many B3 Advisors have been a part of the B3 program for a number of years – some have even been involved since the very beginning! We have parents of former or current students in the B3 program. Some are alumni (at least 33% were students in our program). We have teachers who have witnessed their students transformed by the B3 experience and want to experience B3 for themselves. And others have heard stories from a friend or colleague and decided to get involved. One thing is common with all of our Advisors; they share a passion to work with youth and to volunteer their time in a meaningful way.
Participation as a B3 Advisor is an incredible, life-changing and fun opportunity. It is also a big commitment. We ask that Advisors participate in the many B3 events scheduled throughout the year. For this reason, we require that all new advisors live in the local area. B3 is a year-round program and Advisors must be able to attend team meetings and events. The role of a B3 Advisor requires active involvement in the program from June through the following May.
So what are some of the responsibilities of a B3 Advisor? We ask that Advisors attend a mandatory three part Leadership Workshop with some of their team, attend their team’s retreat, attend monthly meetings, support fundraising efforts, interact and communicate regularly with their assigned students, and complete at least the minimum six hours of local B3 sponsored community service with their team.
We ask Advisors to act as inspirational leaders and guides, demonstrating integrity, patience, tolerance, responsibility, compassion, a thirst for adventure, and a sense of humor. In return, Advisors can expect B3 to provide a safe, supportive environment and the experience of a lifetime.
Is there a fee to be an advisor? Yes, the typical fee is between $900-$1000.
